FAQ

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test designed to prepare students for the SAT, and is administered to 10th and 11th graders across the country. For 11th graders, the PSAT doubles as the National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test, or NMSQT. Students who earn high scores can become National Merit Scholars, winning money for college and a distinction that sets them apart in college applications.

What subjects are covered on the PSAT?

The PSAT, and our practice tests, have four sections: Reading, Writing & Language, and two math sections. One of the math sections allows the use of a calculator, and the other does not. All of the questions on the Reading and Writing & Language sections are multiple-choice with four answer choices. The Math sections of the test primarily consist of multiple-choice questions, with four grid-in questions at the end of each section. The grid-in questions require students to enter their responses into a grid.

Why should we prepare for the PSAT?

There are two primary reasons to prepare for the PSAT. The first is that you want to be competitive for a National Merit Scholarship, and need to perfect your score. Of over 3.5 million students taking the PSAT, the NMSC recognizes 50,000 students nationwide for their exceptional test scores. About 34,000 of these students are named as Commended Students, and the remaining top 16,000 qualify as National Merit Semifinalists.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation gives out over $30 million in scholarships based on student test scores. In addition, the distinction of being a National Merit Scholar sets you apart in your college applications.

The second reason to prepare is that the PSAT is the perfect starting point if you aim to do well on the SAT or ACT. The PSAT helps you gain a solid foundation in the skills and knowledge you will need to succeed on college-entrance exams, and provides questions at the appropriate grade-level. Starting early is the key to success and will ensure that you are well-prepared when the time comes to get ready for the SAT.
