What to Do the Week Before the ACT

What to Do the Week Before the ACT

This post is for students who have been preparing for the ACT and are one week away from the test.

Haven’t started studying yet? Here’s what to do if you only have one week left.

Trust the Prep You’ve Already Done

You might feel pressure to do more in the final week. But if you’ve been studying consistently, you don’t need to ramp up the pace. In fact, it’s time to cut back on the test prep and trust the work you’ve already done.

Look back at your first practice tests and see how you’ve improved. Then, identify one or two areas that are still troubling you and focus narrowly on them this week.

Lighten Up Your Study Schedule

It’s normal to feel nervous, but avoid the temptation to dramatically increase your workload. Cramming in four full practice tests and completely reworking your pacing strategy is more likely to lead to burnout than real progress.

Instead, use this week for light, targeted review on the specific question types you identified above.

If it helps alleviate stress, take one more practice test early in the week. If you are testing on Saturday, take the final test no later than Wednesday. Practice tests are mentally draining, so avoiding them a few days before test day will help you feel more energized and sharp for the real thing.

Take the Night Before Off

You’ve already done a lot of work to get ready for the ACT. One final night of cramming isn’t going to make you better. Instead, get some rest so that you’ll be ready to focus and perform at your best.

Instead of cramming the night before, get ready for the next day. Pack everything you need for the test center, charge your testing device, and make sure you know where you’re going and how long it will take to get there. Then, relax. Watch a movie, read a book, or spend time with friends. Be sure to go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep. Read more about what to do the night before the ACT.
