Which Calculator Can I Use on the Digital SAT?
Keenan Harris2024-04-12T07:51:57-07:00The SAT is now a computer adaptive test, and one of the most notable changes is that there is no longer a “no-calculator” math section of the test. Calculators are now allowed during the entirety of both math modules, and the testing application includes a built-in graphing calculator. These changes may bring up a couple of questions:
Can I use my own calculator on the digital SAT?
Yes. You can use your own calculator as long as it is on College Board’s list of approved calculators.
Here are some important calculator recommendations to consider prior to the test:
- While most graphing calculators and all scientific calculators are permitted during the test, you should double check that your model is on the approved list.
- You should use the same calculator for test prep that you plan to use on test day to make sure you are comfortable with it and know how to use it.
- The night before the test you should ensure that your calculator is working properly. It is always a good idea to put in new batteries, even if you recently replaced them.
What if I do not have a calculator?
The testing app has a built-in graphing calculator that is accessible during every math question. Even if you plan on using your own calculator, Test Innovators recommends that you familiarize yourself with the built-in calculator (Desmos Graphing Calculator) for a few reasons:
- In the event that your calculator malfunctions or is not working properly, you will still be able to use the built-in calculator confidently.
- You may find that the Desmos graphing portion of the calculator is more accessible, efficient, and easier to input equations, navigate around, and zoom in and out on graphs.
- You may find that test prep is simpler if you do not always have to remember your graphing calculator to study.
You can find more information about and learn how to use the Desmos graphing calculator here.
Should I use the Desmos calculator or bring my own to the digital SAT?
It is entirely up to you! Bringing a familiar, approved calculator and using the built-in Desmos calculator are both great options. The main priority is that you are confident, comfortable, and proficient with whichever calculator you choose.
