Introduction

Buckingham Browne & Nichols (BB&N), one of the most sought-after schools in the Boston area, is a coeducational day school for grades pre-k through 12. In addition to offering outstanding academics, BB&N gives students an array of opportunities in the arts, athletics, and community service.

Application

Buckingham Browne & Nichols accepts applications through Ravenna

BB&N’s Lower School entry point grades are beginners (pre-k), kindergarten, and grade 6. Students are welcome to apply to other grades and will be contacted if a spot becomes available. 

BB&N accepts Middle School and Upper School applications for grades 7-11. 

Students applying to Buckingham Browne & Nichols must complete the following steps:

  • Fill out the online inquiry form
    • Date range: September-December
  • Schedule an interview
    • Lower School applicants are able to schedule an interview for entry point grades only (beginners, kindergarten, and grade 6)
    • Interviews are scheduled through BB&N’s admissions site
    • BB&N offers in-person and virtual interviews
    • Date range: September-December
  • Complete the admissions evaluation
    • Beginners and kindergarten: Boston area video evaluation
      • Deadline: January 15th
    • Grades 1-6: virtual group evaluation in January 2023
      • Details sent to applicant families in early January
  • Take an admissions test and send scores by January 15th
    • Grades 5-9: SSAT or ISEE scores required
    • Grades 10-11: SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, or SAT scores required
  • Complete the online application through Ravenna by January 15th
    • Lower School 
      • Send transcript/progress reports from current and previous year
      • Complete the parent statement
      • Submit letter(s) of recommendation

Admissions Interview

Interviews at Buckingham Browne & Nichols are scheduled through their admissions site starting in September. Lower School applicants are able to schedule an interview for entry point grades only (beginners, kindergarten, and grade 6), and the interview is just for parents/guardians. 

Middle School and Upper School applicants participate in a tour and an interview, which are available in-person and virtually. Both options are about 1.5 hours, beginning with a tour and then moving to the interview. Applicants interview for the first 15-20 minutes and then parents/guardians interview in the time remaining. 

The interview is a great opportunity for Buckingham Browne & Nichols to get to know you. It is important to prepare for the interview so you can stand out from the crowd of applicants. Admissions Tests and Evaluations

Buckingham Browne & Nichols requires applicants to submit the following tests/evaluations:

  • Beginners and kindergarten: Boston area video evaluation
  • Grades 1-6: virtual group evaluation
  • Grades 5-9: SSAT or ISEE
  • Grades 10-11: SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, or SAT

Financial Aid Application

Buckingham Browne & Nichols strives to enroll talented students regardless of their economic backgrounds. Over 25% of families at BB&N receive need-based financial aid. In 2019-2020, grant sizes ranged from $5,400 to $52,300. 

Families applying for financial aid must submit the following materials by January 20, 2023:

  • Financial aid application on the School and Student Services website
  • 2021 federal tax return with all schedules
  • 2021 W2
  • Form 1120 (if you are a business owner)

Additionally, the following materials must be submitted by February 17, 2023:

  • 2022 federal income tax return with all schedules
  • 2022 W2

Arts

The Upper School at Buckingham Browne & Nichols has a two-year arts requirement. They offer visual arts courses including ceramics, painting, and woodworking, as well as performing arts courses including dance, drama, film, and music. Students also have the opportunity to engage in visual and performing arts in the Lower School and Middle School, and Middle School students can participate in performance ensembles like chorus and jazz band.
