Meet Roger
Meet Roger
We are excited to introduce Roger, one of our 2023 scholars. Through hard work and dedication, Roger scored in the 99th percentile on the ISEE!
Roger has a wide range of academic interests. He is particularly interested in biology, chemistry, and the arts. Roger also enjoys singing and playing instruments, such as the piano and flute. He shared that playing instruments allows him “to express himself, while working with others.”
Roger aspires to become a doctor in the future and because of that, he is especially interested in chemistry. He is an avid reader and is currently reading a biology textbook.
Outside of school, Roger likes to swim competitively. He also enjoys spending time with his family and learning French. He plans to continue his French studies at his new school.
Preparation
Roger saw significant improvement and self-growth while preparing for the ISEE with Test Innovators. Among the many test-taking skills he learned, Roger developed strong time management skills. He developed an effective time management strategy that involved differentiating easy questions and difficult questions, which gave him sufficient time for each question. Being able to use his time effectively made it possible for Roger to answer all of the questions, which had a big impact on his score improvement.
In addition to learning time management skills, Roger explained that Test Innovators also helped him identify which content areas he needed to focus on. The practice exercise recommendations were particularly helpful because he was able to focus on specific questions that he struggled with and improve in those areas.
Advice for Students
Roger highly recommends starting practice early to allow for ample time to prepare. He explained that it won’t be easy when you first start. Roger said, “Don’t try to get everything right in the beginning. Instead, go back and take your time to get everything right afterwards.” Following this, he strongly advised focusing on time management strategies to allow for an easier test-taking experience. Lastly, Roger advised that students “be observant and be prepared” while answering each question.
Advice for Parents
Roger’s father, Wenyang, encourages parents to let their child take ownership of the preparation process (if they are old enough). He explained that taking a more hand-off approach allowed Roger to really invest in the process. However, Wenyang did stress the importance of helping when they encounter difficult problems. Additionally, he noted that it’s important to offer continued support and encouragement.
New School
Roger is attending the Riverdale Country School in New York. He was drawn to Riverdale’s rigorous academic offerings and strong community. Roger is looking forward to getting involved with the extracurricular programs, such as the French program.
