SAT Scoring

How is the SAT scored? When and how do you see your scores? How do you send scores to schools you’re applying for?

The team here at Test Innovators has the answers!

How is the test scored?
The multiple-choice sections (Reading, Writing and Language, and both Math sections) are scored by counting all of your correctly answered questions. Remember, there is no penalty for incorrect answers. The Reading and the Writing and Language sections are combined and converted into a scaled score ranging from 200-800. The two Math sections are combined and converted into a scaled score ranging from 200-800. The total score is the sum of these two combined scaled scores.

The Essay Section is scored by two scorers. The following three dimensions are scored on a scale of 1-4:
1. Reading: how well you understood the passage and incorporated textual evidence into your essay
2. Analysis: how well you understood the author’s position by explaining how the author used evidence, reasoning, or other persuasive techniques
3. Writing: how well you organized your essay, followed the conventions of standard English, and conformed to a formal style and tone

For each dimension, the two scores (one from each scorer) are added together for a total dimension score out of 8. There is no composite score for the essay.

When will I get my scores?
Scores for the multiple-choice sections (Reading, Writing and Language, and both Math sections) are typically posted two weeks after the test date. The writing score is usually available one week after the multiple-choice scores.

Where do I view my scores?
You can view your scores by logging into your SAT web account.

How do you send your scores to schools you’re applying to?
During registration and up to nine days after your test date, you have the option of selecting four schools to have your scores sent to free of charge. After that, you can send scores to schools for $12 per report.
