Meet Scholarship Winner Mariah M.

Meet Mariah

Mariah is one of the six highly accomplished students who earned a Test Innovators 2018-2019 Independent School Tuition Scholarship. Here’s a little bit about her:

Mariah’s favorite subjects in school are math and science. She loves the solidity of knowing that there is a correct answer and the satisfaction of arriving at the solution. In fact, Mariah enjoys math so much, she continues to study math even outside of the academic year. For instance, this past summer, she opted to enroll in an algebra course so she wouldn’t have to spend several weeks with no formal math classes. When it comes to science, Mariah particularly enjoys biology. Because of her passion for this subject, she has decided that she wants to become a doctor.

When Mariah isn’t working hard academically she likes to dance, specifically ballet. Although she wasn’t able to dance much over the summer, she is hoping to have more time for ballet this school year.

Mariah’s SSAT Preparation

Before Mariah found the Test Innovators platform, she used a different test prep service that included some practice tests, but gave her little guidance on how to improve her scores. With a busy school and extracurricular schedule, she needed a test prep program that would help make the most use of her limited time. Test Innovators identified her weak areas and provided specific, targeted practice so she could focus her time effectively.

After months of preparation on the Test Innovators platform, Mariah scored in the 99th percentile on the SSAT. Needless to say, her hard work is the reason that she is one of our 2018-2019 Independent School Tuition Scholarship winners.

Mariah’s Next School

Mariah is starting 9th grade this fall at the Bush School in Seattle, Washington. The Bush School was founded in 1924 and serves grades K-12. Its mission is to spark in students of diverse backgrounds and talents a passion for learning, accomplishment, and contribution to their communities.

Mariah decided that Bush was the right school for her after attending a shadow day there. One of the programs that Mariah is most excited about is the Cascades Program. The Cascades Program is a service learning project in which students pick from a list of eight different topics that they may be interested in pursuing. The list includes political filmmaking, two different medical programs, photography, etc. Mariah will even have a chance to travel internationally and volunteer in less privileged countries. She is hoping to get into one of the medical programs. This program will give her great experience but also help her stand out in her college applications.

Mariah’s Advice to Other Students

Mariah’s advice for other students preparing to take the test is to start early. Ideally, don’t wait until the beginning of the school year and instead, start the summer before. She also recommends to maintain balance with your study: you shouldn’t study all day long. It’s important to work diligently and to still get a good night’s rest. When it comes to your study time, make sure you deeply review what you’ve gotten wrong rather than focusing your work on your stronger areas. And finally, the week before your test, get plenty of sleep so that you’re well rested on your test day.
