Top 5 Most Competitive SSAT Schools of 2016

The results are in! Here are the top 5 most competitive SSAT schools of 2016, based on the number of students who stated their intention to apply.

1. Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH

Founded by John Phillips in 1781, Philips Exeter Academy is one of the oldest secondary schools in America. The school will meet all demonstrated financial aid needs for admitted students, and even offers a free education to any admitted student whose family income is $75,000 or less. Exeter offers more than 400 courses across 18 subject areas, so students have the freedom to explore different academic interests.

2. Phillips Academy Andover, Andover, MA

Phillips Academy Andover, founded by John Phillips’ nephew Samuel Phillips Jr. in 1778, is the oldest incorporated high school in the United States. The school will meet 100% of a family’s demonstrated financial need, and implemented a full need-blind admission policy in 2009. There are two museums on campus – the Addison Gallery of American Art, and the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology.

3. Lawrenceville, Lawrenceville, NJ

The Lawrenceville School, founded in 1810, blends tradition with “a willingness to explore and adopt the best practices in education as they have evolved.” The school prides itself on a residential House System similar to schools like Harvard, Yale, and traditional British boarding schools (think Hogwarts). The campus was designed by legendary American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

4. Choate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, CT

Choate Rosemary Hall has a long history of providing quality education for young women – the original school for girls was founded by Mary Atwater Choate in 1896. A coeducational institution since 1900, Choate Rosemary also offers a unique Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies program which includes the study of language, history, art, architecture, and a full term studying abroad at King’s Academy in Jordan.

5. Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA

Deerfield Academy was founded in 1797 when governor and well-known patriot Samuel Adams granted a charter to found a school in the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Academics are challenging and engaging with small, discussion based courses. Deerfield’s athletic facilities offer over 90 acres of fields, 21 tennis courts, a hockey rink, two gymnasiums, several squash courts, a fully functional boathouse on the Connecticut River, and a downhill ski slope.
