Meet Jen and Henry: the Challenge

Jen’s son, Henry, recently took the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) in the hopes of gaining admittance to The University of Chicago Lab School for 7th grade. The decision to apply was relatively last-minute: they were looking at high school options and saw that The University of Chicago Lab School had an unusually high number of spots open for 7th grade. Deciding it was worth a shot, they started the application process. With only a month to prepare for the ISEE, Jen was looking for a test preparation option that would be flexible enough that they could fit all of their prep into a condensed time frame. She knew that many people took the test multiple times and had months to prepare, but this wasn’t the case for them.

The Solution

When Jen found Test Innovators, she thought it would be the perfect solution for her son. Henry is a very organized and self-directed kid, so an online platform that would allow him to work at his own pace seemed like a great option. They decided to also enlist the additional support and guidance of a Test Innovators tutor, Marina, who worked with Henry to give him the key strategies and skills to be successful on the test. Jen loved being able to sign up for online sessions at their convenience, and the seamless connection between Henry’s online practice and his tutoring sessions.

Preparation Process

Every day, Henry would come home by himself and log into the Test Innovators platform. He structured his independent study time by working on the specific question types identified by the system as his weak areas, and learned how to effectively review the answer explanations for the questions he missed, and work through the related practice exercises.

The two parts of the Test Innovators system that Jen and Henry found most helpful were the additional resources, especially the targeted practice exercises, and the analytics that helped to guide Henry’s study time, so that he focused primarily on the areas in which he needed additional work.

The Results

Most importantly, Henry’s hard work and dedication paid off, and he was accepted at The University of Chicago Lab School. He’s excited for the school year to begin this fall.

Jen said that her son made an incredible amount of progress in a very short amount of time. When Henry came out of the official test, he said that it had been easier than all of the practice he had done before. Jen was thrilled with the results and with the overall experience. If she had to do it again, they would start earlier and take advantage of all the tools made available through the Test Innovators platform.
